1. Avidemux

Avidemux is a free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks. It supports many file types, including AVI, DVD compatible MPEG files, MP4 and ASF, using a variety of codecs. Tasks can be automated using projects, job queue and powerful scripting capabilities. It seems to be the most easy to use video editor for Linux. He’s on the first place in my list because of the easy to use / what it can do - ratio.

You can get the deb file from here or: sudo apt-get install avidemux (it’s in the multiverse repo)

2. Cinelerra

Cinelerra is the most advanced non-linear video editor and compositor for Linux.

How to install it:

for all x86 (full working on 32 and 64 bits), by Paolo Rampino:

- Ubuntu Intrepid uses Pulse Audio as Sound driver. Since it comes with a PulseAudio ESD compatibility layer, Cinelerra can be set to work with PulseAudio. Simply open Cinelerra and go to Settings->Preferences->Playback->Audio Driver. Select ESound and set the following parameters:

- These packages set shmmax to 0×7fffffff and add non-English language support for Cinelerra.

3. Kino

Kino is a non-linear DV editor for GNU/Linux. It features excellent integration with IEEE-1394 for capture, VTR control, and recording back to the camera. It captures video to disk in Raw DV and AVI format, in both type-1 DV and type-2 DV (separate audio stream) encodings.
You can load multiple video clips, cut and paste portions of video/audio, and save it to an edit decision list (SMIL XML format). Most edit and navigation commands are mapped to equivalent vi key commands. Also, Kino can export the composite movie in a number of formats: DV over IEEE 1394, Raw DV, DV AVI, still frames, WAV, MP3, Ogg Vorbis, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4. Still frame import and export uses gdk-pixbuf, which has support for BMG, GIF, JPEG, PNG, PPM, SVG, Targa, TIFF, and XPM. MP3 requires lame. Ogg Vorbis requires oggenc. MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 require mjpegtools or ffmpeg. MPEG-4 requires ffmpeg.

To install it: sudo apt-get install kino

4. PiTiVi

Taking into account the fact that not everybody has the same knowledge of video editing, nor the same needs, PiTIVi provides several ways of creating and modifying a timeline. Ranging from a simple synopsis view (a-la iMovie) to the full-blown editing view (aka Complex View) which puts you in complete control of your editing.

Other interfaces can be added via the plugin system, aimed at more specific uses like a SlideShow creator or a subtitling editor. It is even possible to use pitivi without a user interface in order to do batch rendering.

To install it: sudo apt-get install pitivi

5. KDEnlive

Kdenlive is an intuitive and powerful multi-track video editor, including most recent video technologies. To see all the features, visit it’s homepage.

To install it (Intrepid):

Go to your system menu > Software sources > Third-Party Software
Click add and paste this line in:

Close software source and click reload

6. LiVES

LiVES mixes realtime video performance and non-linear editing in one application. It will let you start editing and making video right away, without having to worry about formats, frame sizes, or framerates. It is a very flexible tool which can be used by both VJ’s and video editors - mix and switch clips from the keyboard, trim and edit your clips, and bring them together using the multitrack timeline. You can even record your performance in real time, and then edit it further or render it straight away as a new clip !

7. The Open Movie Editor

Open Movie Editor is a free and open source video editing program, designed for basic movie making capabilities. It aims do be powerful enough for the amateur movie artist, yet easy to use.

EGYPT: Sex and jealousy

Despite its emphasis on sexuality, Aiten Amin’s first short movie, “Her Man,” has gained wide acclaim among movie fans and several critics in Egypt. The rising director surprised many Muslim viewers with an unflinching glimpse into the sexual and moral codes of Egypt’s urban poor.

Given her economic dependency on her husband, Zeina, the movie’s leading character, was forced to submit to the latter’s decision to take a younger bride for his second wife and move her into the same house. Yet Zeina’s submission was not complete. Here lies the most incendiary component of the story: To oust her adversary, she slept with her, leaving a mark on her breast to make their common husband, Sobhi, think that his new wife was cheating on him.

“I liked the story because it is so dramatic and it reflects human complexity,” said Amin.

The movie is based on a short story by the renowned London-based Egyptian novelist Ahdaf Soueif.

“I was hesitant and a bit afraid at the very beginning to work on such a story, given its content. However, as I was very much in love with the book, I went forward with the idea,” Amin said.

The movie shows how women in a particular social stratum are obsessed with sexuality. This point was well conveyed through the portrayal of the husband. Viewers never see Sobhi’s face, only his hands, lips and hairy chest. By focusing on his flesh, the director showed that the sexual component was a crucial element for the jealous wife.

Amin’s movie is part of the growing phenomenon of independent low-budget movies that cast non-famous, talented crews in Egypt. Amin, a graduate of Cairo University’s commercial school, could not forsake her passion for cinema. After her graduation in 1999, Amin embarked on independent studies in movie making. “In independent movies, you do whatever you which, nobody imposes the topic or the cast on you,” Amin said.

Since it came out it in January 2007, “Her Man” was screened in many places around the world, including the U.S., France and Italy. It was awarded two prizes at home, including a best-movie prize at a newly launched film festival last week.

As big movie theaters do not usually screen short films, Amin’s movie is making it to the public in the auditoriums of cultural centers and bookstores.

In order to participate in an independent film contest this summer, Amin was asked to take 20 seconds out of her 10-minute movie where the two women were having sex. However, the embattled director preferred not to participate rather than distort her piece.

“I did not think my film was that provocative, especially that the sexual scenes were not imposed on the plot,” she said.

Still, Amin is satisfied with her first stint. “I did not expect that much attention for my film,” she added.

I wish you success,” he said. We had spent 10 minutes in his office. When he finished speaking, that was a signal it was time for us to leave. We told him: “Excuse us, Sayed.” He motioned as if he wanted to stand up to say goodbye, but we didn’t wish to burden him. Outside his office, others were waiting their turn.

Halima

To tell you the truth I wish that this could be a mistake and Halima would be alive in Gaza some where and there is some sort of misunderstanding. This is originally from Ahmed Abdel Fatah blog,He received an email with the following details.

This beautiful little girl is Palestinian Halima ,these photos were taken in Cairo last year 2008 when she came with her family , her brother was being treated in some Egyptian hospital.

And now these were the last photos taken for Halima in Gaza 2009.

Yes Halima could be from the early victims of the IDF unknown weapons in Gaza , she may have earned her world fame in this terrible photo shoot.The world did not know her as the smiling beautiful merry Halima but rather …remaining of Halima, what can I say !!?? The photos can speak more than I do

The problem is that if she were not Halima whom I do not know personally ,she could be another little girl who once smiled like any kid in front of the camera and made faces in front of the camera.

I know that I posted the photo above in the early days of the attack on Gaza ,there was another terrible photo for her you can find in the Gaza death slide show.

P.S I used “is” above because Halima is martyr and in Islam martyrs are not dead ,they are alive ,I know that she is now living in real peace.

We’ve been impressed by thte quality of their work and contacted them, asking to design an unusual and creative icon set.
